Seeing your parents this holiday? Watch for this when you head home.

You may think everything is fine when you call or FaceTime your older parents … but seeing them in person during the holidays may tell a completely different story!

3 subtle signs of decline most adult children miss… and why seeing your parents in person matters more than you think.

This is the first video in a simple holiday series created to help you navigate this season with clarity instead of panic.

Your older parents might be acting fine… but the truth shows up in the small things. The little changes. The moments they hope you don’t notice.

And this holiday might be your only real chance to catch what’s actually shifting with them.

Most adult children don’t realize they’re missing early warning signs until it becomes a crisis.

So if you’re seeing your parents in person this year, pay attention. You’ll notice more than they tell you… and those small signs can be the thing that protects them later.

I reached out to the experts at aplan2age, a non profit group that helps families understand what’s really happening with older parents and how to plan ahead with confidence for answers in caregiving and aging.

They shared three (3) core things every adult child should quietly look for when you’re together in person… movement, cognition, and mood. These early clues often reveal what your parents won’t say out loud.

I think you'll find this video helpful.

This is the first of three videos to help you. The next video will come out after Thanksgiving and will walk you through what to do once you notice something… how to talk to your parents without causing conflict… and how to get your siblings or family on the same page.

And if you notice something this holiday don’t say anything or try to fix anything right now. It's a process. Just make mental notes and MOST OF ALL enjoy your time with each other.

Happy Holidays from Advanced Adulting & A Plan2 Age.

ADVANCED ADULTING is brought to you by our partner : APlan2Age, a nonprofit helping families caring for older loved ones plan before things go off the rails, and giving you real help when they already have.

If you’ve got aging parents — you know that nobody wants to plan or talk about things until something happens. And suddenly, you’re in crisis mode, trying to figure out care, costs, doctors, and what to do next.

They’re a nonprofit built to help families do two things:

  1. Plan before a crisis.
  2. Survive it when it hits.

APlan2Age provides families a roadmap with education and resources to navigate life as they age. They want to change the narrative so that aging and care become normal conversations, not emergency events

They give you free tools, guides, and education that cover everything from:

  • How to pay for care (Get the FREE GUIDE “10 Ways to Pay for Care” )
  • How to build a Family Care Plan so everyone knows what’s what.
  • Legal & financial planning basics (advance directives, powers of attorney, who’s in charge).
  • How to talk to your parents, siblings, or spouse about aging without starting World War III.
  • What options exist for care — from home help to assisted living — and how to find trustworthy resources.

They’re not selling anything. They just give you free, practical tools like the free guide 10 Ways to Pay for Care” — which shows you real financial options you may not know about — and a Family Care Plan that helps you organize everything so your family isn’t guessing.

The most thoughtful gift for an older adult when you can’t be there in person If you’re wondering what to get mom, dad, or an older loved one this upcoming holiday, I want to share something I genuinely love. I’m a terrible gift giver. Always have been. And when you can’t visit… when you’re far away… or life just doesn’t allow you to be there in person, finding a gift that actually means something can feel impossible. That’s why I was so impressed when the founder of Connected Seasons, Allen,...

NEW EPISODE The Truth About Falls, Fear & Aging at Home with Matt Guerrieri | Caring for older parents living alone. It's estimated that approximately 90% older adults want to "age at home." It's great that people want to live independently, but it also brings up legitimate concerns about safety. If you’re in the Sandwich Generation, caring for aging parents while still trying to live your own life, you already know this truth: We usually don’t do anything… until there’s a 911 moment. The...

NEW EPISODE Lost in Translation: How Miscommunication Can Harm Your Aging Parents If you’ve ever cared for a parent or aging loved one, you already know the “telephone game” is real. Mom hears one thing at the doctor. Your sibling hears something totally different. And by the time it gets to you? The story has changed three times. And it’s not because people don’t care. It’s because there’s too much information, too many emotions, and not enough clarity. In this conversation, I sit down with...
